3-9-13 SATURDAY A.M.AND ALL IS QUIET

March 9, 2013

It is 8 a.m.
and I have to get out the door
to go down to Pasadena
for a funeral in the form of a "wake".

It turns out that it is on Saturday,
not Friday,
as I had previously reported
in my previous post.

For those who don't know,
a "wake" is an ancient Irish tradition
which is followed
by many members of my family.

It is for those
who do not grieve the death of their loved one
because they believe
that he or she
has gone on to a better place.

So we have a very sober celebration
among immediate family members
with the closest of friends
and other loved ones
to commemorate the life
of our now deceasesd loved one.

As one can imagine
it is difficult to be too sad
if you believe that your loved one
has moved on into spirit form
of which they are truly made.

Of course we are all grieved over the loss,
but we see no cause for despair,
above and beyond
our own immediate loss.

While this may sound strange
to many ears,
it is, nevertheless,
the case.

For me it is the norm
on my fathers' side of the family
and practiced by some
on my mother's side.

The Irish blood
being much more recent and pronounced
on my dad's side.

The all-day seminar on Thursday
was nothing short of spectacular.

I will have more to say about that
when I have a little more time to write.

It seems that a group at Stanford
is finally starting to put the pieces together
thanks to a whole lot of PET scanning
and use of
other types of medical imaging technologies.

The PET scan and
fMRI
(functional magnetic resonance imaging)
are allowing researchers
to actually watch the mind work
in real time.

This is providing insights
that I find truly astonishing.

It is really interesting,
after having worked in mental health
at different times in my life,
to see the underlying structures
and their processes,
which are directing the actions
of persons
whom we all thought
were
 "just nuts".

And then to realize
exactly how the structure is causing
the particular behavior,
with the chemistry which is driving all of this,
while remembering
various different "clients"
(that is what we call them)
and their very deblitating abnomalities.

I am still somewhat dumbfounded
as I continue to ponder
and to do follow-up study.

I will have more to say, hopefully, later.

Right now I REALLY do have to get going.

w/profound love
(beyond understanding)

3-4-13 GOOD MORNING!! IN MARCH

March 4, 2013
This is going to be a very busy week,
I can see.

Tomorrow I must travel up north.

Returning following morning.

Then to a seminar on the following morning.

Then to a funeral "wake",
70 miles south of here,
on the next morning.

Just for the record,
on Thursday I am expecting to be at a seminar
regarding the latest findings
in the science of brain chemistry
as it relates to nutrition.
The speaker is one of the leading physicians
and researchers
in this area,
and is from Stanford,
where much of the ...

3-1-13 VIOLIN 101

March 1, 2013
(note: the following is being written as a memorialization of the facts herein contained, no more, and no less; it is written in the manner of a debriefing, and is intended as such.)

I had agreed to meet with someone yesterday afternoon, af my office/studio.

I  just got back from forty-eight hours of travel and was very tired.

All I wanted to do was to get the wiring completed on the four syntehsizers, controller, and sound card and computer.

That is a pretty tall order, I must say.

So, the last t...

2-27-13 DON'T GIVE UP!!

February 28, 2013
I am writing this at 3 a.m.
on 2-28-13.

It is dated 2-27-13
in order to memorialize that date
for the message which was received
on that date (about 14 hours ago),
as follows:

DON'T GIVE UP

Wow!!

That's all I really want to say about that at this time.

On a lighter note,

I have finally gotten to sit down
for about one hour
at the Roland A-88
(full-size piano keyboard)
controller,
which is currently connected
to a Korg Krome synthesizer.

Korg is famous,
to me,
for their piano sounds (presets)
for man...

2-25-13 UPDATE

February 26, 2013

I really have nothing new to say
at this time.

Am leaving for northern California tomorrow
for a quick trip up and back.

Yes, business, as usual.

Have been holding off on doing any musical work
pending my receipt of the MOTU multiple-MIDI box
which I spoke of in the last post.

For those who have no reason to know such things,
MOTU is an acronym for
The Mark of The Unicorn.

This is a very innovative company
which has been making
top-of-the line electronic gear
for musicians
for some years now.

When ...

2-23-13 CHECKING IN

February 23, 2013
All has been relatively quiet here
during past several days.

Had much catch-up work to do.

Have continued with that
for much of past several weeks.

Much running to and fro.

Have had little time to play,
but have managed,
at all odd hours of the night
and early a.m.,
to put together four hardware synthesizers
with about ten "soft" synthesizers.

Now we are starting to get somewhere.

As you might guess,
wiring everything together
and making all software and hardware
talk with one another flawlessly
ta...

2-12-13 NEW SONGS POSTED

February 13, 2013
I thought for several days
how I would like to have
some meditative choral music.

I was very tired
and wanted it to be quiet
and relatively non-complex.

Finally at 7 p.m. on 2-11-13
I wrote the first song,
and then later that night at about 4:30 a.m.
on what was now 2-12-13
I wrote the second one.

So, the two songs are titled
021113b
and
021213a.

They are meant to be very unpretentious,
but while remaining within the confines
of the historical genre.

Am musing over where to go next,
as I write this....

2-7-13 NEW SONG POSTED

February 8, 2013
I got up at about 4:30 a.m.

By 5:30 a.m.
the first light of day was coming out.

Because it was very foggy outside
it was impossible to tell
exactly what direction
any given light was coming from.

Nice and quiet and foggy.

A perfect Ventura morning.

It was what I always loved about this city
and several others
going up the coast from here.

All of that "horrible" fog.

Good setting
to write a quiet piece
for choir,
titled
020713a.

Note how the choral song
goes with the organ song
just prior to it.

And how ...

2-5-13 POSTED NEW SONG

February 6, 2013

At about 7 p.m. this evening
I went "organ crazy"
and decided that it was time
to write something
for solo organ.

The title is
(I'll bet you guessed it, huh?)
020513a.

I feel that I must warn
that organ solo
is not for everybody.

Almost everyone I have ever known
hates it.

My own dad
told me that it is only for
funerals
and such like.

I strongly disagreed with him then
and now,
as regards this most singular of matters.

It all depends on whether the person playing
or writing
is alive or dead.

Unfortunatel...

2-4-13 JUST CHECKING IN, AGAIN

February 5, 2013

I just got in from northern California.

It is about 15 minutes past 11 p.m.

Spent the past three days
doing rigorous "conditioning" exercises
in the form of seven mile
walks on the beach,
once each day,
faster each time.

I use a pair of tubular metal walking sticks,
which act like cross-country ski poles,
so that one can get upper torso
in on the action.

Is especially useful
when climbing up hills or embankments,
or crossing boulder fields.

Takes a lot of pressure off of the knees.

Of course that do...
